Hematite and Quartz
Egremont, West Cumberland Iron Field, Cumberland, Cumbria, England, UK
58 x 51 x 40 mm overall
Blades of lustrous black metallic specular Hematite to 7 mm across, some with brownish hematitic coating, host lustrous, colorless Quartz crystals up to 15 x 13 mm. Many of the Quartz are doubly terminated and some are dipyramidal. The brown coating could be removed, but I like the contrast. From the A.G. Boynton collection, this specimen is in excellent condition, with just a few marginal contacts. Boynton was a mining engineer circa 1910-1920, and City Manager of Boulder City, Nevada in the mid-1940s. He assembled a nice collection of rare specimens from the localities of the 1910s to the 1940s.
