Calcite on Quartz
Idarado Mine, Ouray District, Telluride, San Miguel County, Colorado, USA
257 x 117 x 96 mm
Sculptural specimen of blocky Quartz crystals coated with sparkly Quartz druze is accented by a brilliant-white milky Quartz crystal measuring 88 x 24 x 20 mm, whose base is likewise coated with Quartz druze. The termination has a small chip visible under a loupe. The larger Quartz crystals formed first, followed by a layer of smaller crystals coating the larger crystals. Light-cream-colored doubly-terminated Calcite scalenohedrons to 34 mm are liberally perched on the specimen. There are a few broken crystals, which don't distract, on this is nice display specimen from the Idarado mine which was closed in 1978. This is a large specimen measuring over 10 inches across and weighing over 4 pounds, and it displays well from both sides.
