Stolzite
Darwin Mine, New Coso District, near Darwin, Inyo County, California, USA
87 x 43 x 41 mm overall
with up to 15 mm Stolzites
Over a dozen sharp, pseudo-octahedral crystals of grey Stolzite with satiny luster cover a yellow and brown limonitic matrix. These Stolzites have textbook tetragonal form and blue fluorescence. In 2006, work done at the Mackay School of Mines of the University of Nevada demonstrated that all of these specimens previously thought to be Scheelite were in fact Stolzite. "These must therefore be counted as among the world's finest stolzites," according to Mineralogical Record. Although there is some marginal damage, this is a very rich specimen from this famous California locality.
