Magnetite with Fluorapatite

Iron Springs District (Three Peaks), Iron Co., Utah, USA

Sold
Large Cabinet

125 x 86 x 84 mm overall

A cluster of sharp, lustrous, metallic-dark-gray, intergrown octahedrons of Magnetite to 43 mm totally cover a matrix of solid Magnetite, accented with traces of lemon-yellow apatite and a patch of milky-white Quartz (var. Chalcedony). A lustrous, well-terminated, partly-Chalcedony-crusted, lemon-yellow crystal of Fluorapatite to 13 x 8 mm is nestled near the edge of the specimen. A few small green Ferro-hornblende crystals are tucked within the Magnetites. The luster of the Magnetite is brighter than typical for this locality. As the apatite forms first, and is later engulfed by the Magnetite, causing considerable stresses, finding intact Fluorapatites is not common. Except for one of the Magnetite crystals, this specimen is quite free of damage, and is an excellent example from this classic Utah locality. Under SW UV, the Apatite fluoresces red and the Chalcedony a bright green.
