Beryl (var. Morganite) on Albite (var. Cleavlandite) Illustrated
White Queen Mine, Hiriart Mtn., Pala, Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA
185 x 118 x 99 mm overall
This large, doubly-terminated pink Beryl (var. Morganite), measuring 82 x 65 x 61 mm, and perched on a plate of Albite (var. Cleavlandite), is from Norm Dawson’s famous find in 1966. The Cleavlandite has the distinctive blue color some San Diego localities are known for. A few light-smoky Quartz crystals, several balls of light-purple Lepidolite, and another partial Morganite provide contrasting accents on the Cleavlandite. Although the exterior faces of the Morganite are lightly etched, the interior is quite gemmy, and the crystal glows with a rich peachy-pink color. A small chip on the top face of the Morganite, which has existed since the piece was found over 50 years ago, has been expertly restored.
This world famous locality, which is permanently closed, will never again produce specimens. Specimens of this quality are very rare, and as an added bonus, this specimen was figured on the cover of the February 1966 issue of the Lapidary Journal. This is a really superb gem Morganite and a MAJOR piece from this highly sought after USA locality.
