Quartz (smoky) with Pyrite
Dodo Mine, Saranpaul, Tyumenskaya Oblast', Prepolar Ural, Western-Siberian Region, Russia
165 x 116 x 78 mm overall
This large, single crystal of alpine-quality smoky Quartz is doubly terminated and has grown scepter like on a sliver of schist matrix. It has great luster, and an unusual light-brown smoky color, with a quality and luster usually associated with the Swiss and French Alps. The clarity at the termination is top notch, and the internal veiling creates a sparkling effect. Many of the faces are broad and sharp, and with the exception of one small chip on the side of the crystal it is pristine. Small brassy crystals of Pyrite are sprinkled on the reverse of the specimen. In excellent condition, this is complete all around. Quartz specimens of this high quality came out in the 1990s to early 2000s, with none since. Purchased by Carolyn from Ray Grant in 2002, it is a great example of alpine Quartz from this remote Russian locale.
