Barite
Villia Mines, Villia, Plaka, Lavrion District Mines, Attika Prefecture, Greece
52 x 35 x 25 mm overall
Barite is known from thousands of localities around the world, but the ones from the ancient Laurion mining district are beautiful and distinctive. Many of them often have a golden or even an orange hue, but good red Barite specimens are highly sought. During the early 1990s, the Villia Mines, a small ancient system of tunnels, were well-known for the specimens of flesh-red cockscomb Barite found there. This specimen has beautiful, sharp, lustrous, bladed crystal groups of red Barite on matrix. Individual Barite crystals are up to 10 mm across. The color in person is redder than the pinkish color of the photographs. This is an aesthetic and important specimen with no damage
